Photo video or photo album? How they compare, and why you might want both

A photo album is something you hold and page through at your own pace. A photo video is something you watch together, with motion and music, and can send to anyone. Albums are best for keeping a lot of photos in one place; a video is best for an occasion or a gift. They don't compete, and you can keep both: the album for the shelf, the video for the evening.

Three ways to keep family photos

When people say "album" today they can mean three different things:

  • A printed album of individual prints, the kind with plastic sleeves that lives on a shelf.
  • A photo book, designed online and printed as a bound book.
  • A photo video, where the photos become a short film with music. With Echoes' signature Growing style, each photo naturally morphs into the next, so you watch someone change over the years.

What an album does that a video can't

  • You can linger. Nobody decides how long you look at a page. You can stop on one photo for a minute and tell the story behind it.
  • It holds everything. An album can keep hundreds of photos. A video works best with a chosen set.
  • It needs nothing to open it. No screen, no file, no charger.

I love both, for what it's worth:

"I've always been a nostalgic person. I love old photos, videos, and vacation albums."

What a video does that an album can't

  • The photos move. In an animated video a grandmother smiles and turns her head, a toddler runs toward the camera. For people who only knew a relative from still photos, that's often the moment that stays with them.
  • Everyone watches at once. At a birthday, an anniversary, or a bar or bat mitzvah, a video plays on one screen for the whole room. An album goes around the table one person at a time.
  • It travels. Family abroad can watch it the same evening on WhatsApp. An album lives in one house.
  • It can show change. A Growing video blends each photo into the next, so you watch someone grow up in one continuous piece. A page of photos can't do that.

How long each one lasts

Neither format looks after itself.

  • Prints fade and wear with light, heat, damp, and handling. Keep albums somewhere cool, dry, and dark, and handle old prints gently. The Library of Congress has a short guide to caring for photographs.
  • Digital files don't fade, but they can be lost. The Library of Congress recommends keeping at least two copies of your digital photos, in different places, refreshing them about every five years, and checking once a year that they still open.

The practical upshot: keep the album safe, and keep the video in more than one place. With Echoes the finished video stays in your account dashboard, and it's worth downloading a copy to your own computer or cloud storage as well.

Using both

The two work best together. One way to do it:

  1. Keep the album as the archive. It holds every photo, including the ones that aren't anyone's best moment.
  2. Make the video from a chosen set. Photograph the album's best prints with your phone in even daylight, straight on - no scanner needed - and add recent photos from your phone. Choose photos where the face is clearly visible; if a face is hidden or tiny, the AI has to fill in the details and it stops looking like the person.
  3. Play the video at the occasion, then pass the album around afterwards. Once people have watched the video, the prints are a natural next thing to look at.

For the video, the smallest package is a 1-minute video, which takes 13 photos in Growing style, our signature video (or 12 in Classic style, which works best with group photos), and each extra minute takes 12 more. If you're deciding between a moving video and a plain slideshow, see photo slideshow or animated video. And if the photos are mostly old prints, how to make a video from old photos walks through it.

Every Echoes video can open with a personal AI opening with your own text. One of the styles, Album of Memories, opens like a photo album, which suits this kind of video well. Music can be your own song, the built-in library, or a custom song generated for the video, and the video can end on a closing title card.

Create your video with Echoes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn the photos from an old album into a video?
Yes. Photograph each print with your phone in even daylight, straight on, avoiding reflections from plastic sleeves, then upload those photos. You don't need a scanner, and the album stays exactly as it is.
Where is the finished video kept?
In your account dashboard, ready to download whenever you like. It stays there, so you can come back to download or share it again. It's still worth keeping your own copy too.
Can I print the video's photos as an album afterwards?
The photos are yours, so nothing stops you from printing the same set as a photo book. Echoes itself makes the video, not printed albums.
Which is the better gift for grandparents?
It depends on them. Some grandparents love turning pages; others love watching on the TV or a digital frame. One nice option is to give the video and print a few of the best photos to go with it.
How long does a photo video take to make?
With Echoes, most people finish in under 30 minutes once the photos are gathered. Each animation is created in the background, so you can start it and come back when it's ready.
Are my photos private?
Yes. Your photos are private to you, stored securely, never used to train AI models, and you can delete them from your dashboard at any time.
