The two ways photos turn into a video

There isn't one "animate photos" effect - there are two, and they feel different:

The thing that separates a real video from a slideshow is the handoff between photos. A hard cut from one picture to the next is jarring; a soft blend keeps your eye moving through the story.

The most common blend is a cross dissolve, where the first photo fades out as the next one fades in, overlapping for a moment so the change feels gentle instead of abrupt. A morph goes further: it warps the shapes in one photo toward the next while it blends, so a face can flow into an older face without a visible break. That morph is the effect behind a continuous growing video.

Which photos animate best

The single rule that matters most: use photos where the face is clearly visible. If a face is turned away, tiny, or hidden, the AI fills in the missing details and it stops looking like the person. That's the most common reason an animation disappoints, and it's easy to avoid.

A couple more things help:

• Keep one clear main subject in each photo, so they stay the focus.
• For a morph, keep the same main subject across the photos. That consistency is what makes the blend read as one person changing over time rather than a jumble.

You don't need perfect, high-end photos. Ordinary ones often animate better, and old prints are welcome - photograph them with your phone in even daylight instead of scanning. For fragile originals, the Library of Congress has a short guide to caring for and handling photographs.

How many photos you need

Packages are priced by the length of the finished video. The smallest is a 1-minute video, which takes 13 photos in Growing style or 12 in Classic style, and each extra minute takes 12 more. Portrait, landscape, or square?

Choose the shape that fits most of your photos; the photos matter more than the format. Landscape is better for playing on a screen at an event, portrait suits Stories, Reels and TikTok, and square is a good compromise for both, and for a mixed set of photo shapes. The video's shape follows your photos, so a set of mostly landscape photos gives you a landscape video.
